LOS ANGELES – Celebrities on the go are giving a ringing endorsement to a mini handbag for cell-phones called “Poppie bags.” The line, launched last year has found fans in Debra Messing, Camryn Manheim, Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz and others who don’t want to fumble through their purse for a ringing mobile phone only to miss a call. The 5' x 3' inch bags, designed to hold a cellphone, fasten around a purse strap or belt loop, allowing easy access. “It’s fantastic,” says Manheim, who has a red patent leather one. “I carry my cellphone in my Poppie bag and I never, ever need to look for it again.” Diaz has one in python-print denim and Aniston has the red patent leather. Messing owns a leopard print. In all, there are more than 20 fabrics and designs, including hand-painted camouflage suede, black crinkle patent leather, gold foil, denim, toile and ostrich. Poppie Harris, 26, an aspiring actress, came up with the idea after missing an important call from her agent. She designed a bag for herself but didn’t know she had a hit on her hands until one day at her doctor’s office. Patients in the waiting room asked if it came in fuschia and periwinkle. She says her $145 bags are perfect for celebrities at formal events. “When they have on their beautiful gowns, all they really need are the bare essentials: cellphone, a lip gloss and their ID,” Harris says, “It’s the perfect size bag. They can put it on their wrist. It also has the perfect little touch of pretension which we all like.” The bags are available online at www.poppiebags.com. Barneys, Bendels, Bergdorf Goodman and select boutiques also carry them.
